Is it just me or does it strike anyone else as somewhat strange that the new Find My iPhone application is for the iPhone?
Uh, guys, if I can install an app on it, it’s probably not that lost.
I mean, how many of these things do you think I own?
Oh… A lot, I guess.

Imagine this:
Your at Starbucks. You go to reach for your iPhone and realize that it is missing.
OH NO!
Forget about asking someone to use their laptop, they are much more likely to let you download an app with their iphone, put in your personal information, and find your phone…well…at least thats what apple wants the world to be like.
Seriously? You think some stranger’s going to let me use his phone right after I just lost mine? And you think he’s going let me install software on it? And even though he’s obviously the nicest, and quite possibly the dumbest, person in the universe, I don’t think I’d be totally comfortable entering my MobileMe credentials on his iPhone. Sounds like a recipe for disaster all ’round if you ask me.
Nevertheless, people seem pretty psyched about this app. It’s not a terrible idea, I guess. I’m just not sure why they didn’t make a version for the Desktop. Now that would be cool.

I can see it in a family situation where my wife and daughter both have them and we can help the other locate a missing device.
I think Chris’ situation would be more like you were out with friends and if they’re like-minded and have iPhone’s they could help you locate your phone.
I don’t know if a desktop app makes sense. I like the idea of the web app better and Apple’s implementation works pretty well. I would like to see MobileMe be free or at least a tiered solution that includes a free tier.
Yeah, I know. There are surely times when this might be useful. It just struck me as funny. In the press it’s like, “Oh, thank heaven! We’ve been waiting for this for so long.” When in fact it’s really only useful to owners of multiple iDevices who happen to lose one of them. This doesn’t strike me as a situation that occurs all too often.
Totally agree that MobileMe should be free, at least to iPhone owners. This just makes good sense.
