I admin a range of systems, and even on some serious Solaris systems, my mantra is &quot;When in doubt, reboot&quot; on a heavily used server system, that&#039;s got great uptimes, I don&#039;t take this lightly, but if there&#039;s some weird shit happening and you can&#039;t explain it any other way, a quick reboot can work wonders.</description>

While it is intellectually dirty, and most of the time technically overkill, a reboot causes the operating system to automatically perform a series of task the user would not know how to perform otherwise—such as renewing DHCP leases, scanning for fresh wireless networks, clearing (part of) the many stale caches lying around, etc.

I usually add a quick login hook on computers I episodically manage to run a few additional maintenance tasks such as emptying the trash, checking for software and anti-virus updates, etc. thereby maximising the clean-up potential of a reboot.

An oft-underestimated advantage is that it brings the interface back to a default state, too, enabling the user to start again afresh, and often enabling him to find the button or menu that he is, in fact, after.</description>
