Taking the iPhone 3GS on the subway will repeatedly get its compass all out of whack. It sits and spins in all directions. Eventually it produces this screen:

I don’t know how the compass works in the phone. But I’d venture a guess that the big, giant electrified track might have something to do with the “Interference” referenced in the alert.

The compass thinks it’s pointing in an infinite number of directions, all at once!
I’ve noticed that mine will change the direction it’s pointing just by moving it a foot to the left or right (without spinning it at all). It’s as if north was located about 4 feet from it. I was hoping for something a little more accurate

That’s odd. Mine’s been fairly accurate everywhere but the subway. Perhaps you live next to a very large magnet?

most digital compasses i’ve used ask you to do the same thing. the trick is to just rotate the phone in 3d.
so like from face down and sideways…rotate to face up.
