I suppose you could, but if that's what you're doing, maybe this is the wrong sort of service for you. In any case, I don't see this rule being a problem for me. File size limitations, yes, but linking files via HTML, not a biggie.

Regarding the 75% linked file rule, can you not just generate a list of all files on the filesystem and stick those in a html file that is not publicly accessible?

Peter,

I can't quite justify the cost of a colo yet. Maybe some day, when TASB is pulling in gobs of cash ;). But for now, my $20 Grid Service should, hopefully, cut it.

And, just to be clear, I never exceeded my disk quota. The problem was that the files on disk could not be bigger than 500k according to WHB policy. Which I find totally insane.

FJ de Kermadec,

Thanks for the tip! I can't decide if WHB is being scammy or not, but it sure seems like it to me given that their policy renders their offered disk capacity useless. In any case, we'll see how things go with MT. Hopefully it will be smooth sailing. They really get a lot of good press. I will check out Pair and consider them should I need a fallback.

@Anonymous, thank you for the link to Media Temple's Usage Policy. I looked all over for it, but it appears to be buried in their Legal link on the Company page. I will update my post to reflect this information.

This is why I fork out the extra bucks for my own colo space.

If I want more disk space I just have to buy more disk.

Plus it gives me an excuse to visit the Mucky Duck just down the street.

Taken from http://mediatemple.net/company/legal/aup_general.php

75% of customer's content files stored on Provider's server must have associated HTML, or PHP files inside the account linking to the content stored on that account.

Hm. Sorry to hear that. They've been good for me so far. But we'll see how it goes.

Best of luck.

While my own site is nothing to look at, I do run quite a few sites for clients, and have repeatedly bumped into similar situations, even with, serious, honest companies that are just a bit over-protective or don't monitor their servers well enough to be flexible.

My own haven has been Pair Networks, on both shared and dedicated hosting accounts. Their site may be old-fashioned but the hosting isn't! If you ever need to spread your assets, I'd investigate them.

In the meantime, I'll give (MT) a serious look, as one can never have too many hosts in reserve…
