iPhone Video Capture

Why is it there’s still no video capture application for the iPhone? Unless, of course, you hack the poor beast. That’s right, if you’ve jailbroken your iPhone you can get a video capture application for it. In fact you’ll have your choice of two, one of which is actually free (and reportedly of higher quality). But for those of us that prefer our iPhones remain in their gilded cage, we must hobble along with still-capture only. Pffthbbt!

iPhone Video Recorder: Jailbreak-Only

When Apple announced the iPhone app store, video capture was one of the first apps I expected to see. Instead, here we are, a half-a-year later, and no such luck. Too bad, too. This is the one application I’d actually pay for.

Well, this and Bowling, of course.

This is where the distinction in my mind between smartphones and other phones falls: if you can stick any damn software you want on it (without chicanery) it’s a smartphone. If you can’t, it’s not.

The iPhone is a really nice phone. I hate touchscreen phones and I’m still wanting one. But if I was looking for a smartphone (I’m not, I’d really like a phone the size of a burrito that can go for a week between charges because it’s 80% battery) I’d look at a Treo or Winmo phone before an iPhone.

But, damn, it’s cool. Smart or not.

As a confirmed geek I can tell you there have been many times in my life I would have preferred being cool to smart. But today I’m happy to leave that to my phone.

The main thing I love about my iPhone is that all my contacts finally match what’s on my computer(s). Smart or not, it’s pretty sweet.
