to add what Matx says (he's a writer BTW(or was)) I think V.A. who are into the technical skills of there are are def into scripting. eg. A photographer who loves mixing chemistry and doing alternative processing and printing, 9 chances out of 10 has some experience with scripting or programming (or would enjoy it if they had to use it). It's a command and control situation. V.A.s love to control there media. Other artists who are more into the theoretical aspects and concepts of there are may not enjoy the nitty gritty detailing that scripting demands.

I'm a graphic designer/photographer. And I wrote my first shell script today. I'm hooked.

You know, it occurs to me, maybe I'm just making the wrong appeal. It's totally possible that visual artists are capable of being absolute UNIX wizards and that I just haven't figured out how to capture their interest in this topic. I shouldn't be surprised. Thinking back, I remember the other SysAdmins trying to show me UNIX. I'd have none of it. It literally took me years before the light bulb went off.

So yeah, I don't know that my article actually represents any kind of reality necessarily. I'm not even sure Scoville's does. Still, it's fun to think about. I guess sometimes, for me, the most interesting theories are the most preposterous.

-systemsboy

Funny thing. I've worked in art schools, multimedia schools, and post-production and vfx corps. Surrounded by talented artists. What I've learned is that they're way better programmers than i am. Granted, I'm not comp sci, just a hack. 3d artists in particular program and think differently. And visual artists I have learned are keen technical people not flaky abstract painters (well, some of them are!). I've been uising Unix for almost 2 decades and it's not helped my programming. Ha ha. Or my visual arts. (I was a writer for a long time, but I can barely type now -- must be all the cables i've pulled lately and all those little ends I make).

ps. keep up the blog and the note taking. fun stuff.
